geoDefense Swarm

goedefense-swarm1All of you who have played geoDefense know that geoDefense Swarm is really a game that is worth having. It’s another entry into the weary genre of tower defense games on the iPod touch, but in terms of purity of gameplay, geoDefense Swarm may be the king of the hill at the moment. While it doesn’t quite match Fieldrunners in terms of accessibility, it’s definitely a better game for experienced tower defense lovers looking for a challenge. We highly recommend it, and rate it an 8.3 out of 10. If you’ve never played a tower defense game, you set up defenses around an area, and then try and survive wave after wave of enemy assaults. In geoDefense, your towers can’t get damaged, so the game’s all about placing them correctly to defend your home base. Graphically, geoDefense Swarm references heavily the neo-vector graphics that leapt to popularity with the popular game Geometry Wars. Bright colors on a black background with glowing, space-warping explosions all over the place. In the heat of battle, it can be very difficult to tell what’s going on due to all the flashing lights. For all the chaos, the different towers and enemy types are easy to distinguish, due to unique colors and silhouettes. The interface shows that Critical Thought Games know what they’re doing, as it’s precise and easy to handle. The game isn’t without flaws. It has quite a steep learning curve, and learning how various towers and creeps (that’s the bad guys) work isn’t explained very well, you just have to use trial and error. You’re definitely thrown in the deep end with this one and are expected to sink or swim without much instruction. To be honest nothing is perfect, which means that this game is not without its flaws, but we really that in the future these flaws will be corrected, and turn this amazingly fun game into an absolute must have.

The Creeps

creepsThis is a tower defense game with a twist. Instead of your usual towers, castles or fortresses that need to be guarded, you have a small child on its bed, that represents the tower in this case. You are supposed to defend the child from several monsters and boogie men that are trying to give it nightmares. One other twist are the obstacles on your weapons placement. usually in a tower defense game you can place your weapon almost everywhere as long as it is on your enemies path.  But here that is not possible. There are several places that are not a good choice for your weapons placement. Your enemies are the Creeps that live in your closet and they are coming to get you! Defend yourself with toy blasters, glue bottles, flashlights and boomerangs. Summon a giant spider to slow your enemies, or a UFO to sap their energy! Slick the path with oil to make the Creeps slide fast down hill and climb slowly up hill. Or command a tornado to pick the Creeps up and carry them along the path in any direction! You can control tower positions by tapping on an open space and then selecting which tower to place. Once placed towers will attack enemies once they are in range, or you can select enemies or other objects to manually target them. Upgrades can be purchased by tapping on a tower and hitting the upgrade button. If you’ve played tower defense games before, you’ll be familiar with the controls. The hand drawn cartoon visuals look great, and there is a surprising amount of different enemy appearances which helps to vary up the gameplay. The sound effects are amusing and make up for the game’s lack of music. But if players really want music, they can use their iPod with no loss of game sound effects.  All in all this is an interesting game with a lot of new stuff, which promises to give you a great time.

Sentinel 2 Earth Defense

sentinel-2-earth-defense1

My personal opinion is that tower defense games have everything a true gamer needs to become addicted to a game. And Sentinel 2: Earth Defense is just another truly impressive game  that definitely fall into the addicting games category. Your efforts and sacrifices were not enough to keep the aliens from Sentinel 1 away from your planet. Now they have returned more cunning and eager to revenge.  So again, you have to defend your base from numerous waves of aliens as they traverse preset paths. Sentinel 2 has seven towers, and while some are genre standards, there are some creative towers like the ion tower, which creates a fire on the path that will burn oncoming aliens. You can earn money from defeating aliens, and you can use these money to buy stronger and more powerful towers, and upgrades for those towers. Keeping your intermediate gates intact adds to your score, and if your final barrier is broken through, you lose. In addition, after each round, gates beam up energy to the Sentinel. Energy is used for utilizing one of the Sentinel’s four weapons: homing missiles, attack drones, time warp, and orbital laser… all of which affect the whole map and are extremely powerful. This game contains two game modes: Campaign - where you have four maps with a preset number of waves, and you cannot unlock the next map, until you have completed the one you are on at the moment, and you also have to be aware that each map contains four levels of difficulty; and missions mode - where you have ten missions with tricky scenarios and very low resources, so you will have to defeat the aliens just by using your God given skills. If you download this game you will notice that the graphics are definitely one of the best, the theme is fantastic, bringing to you an impressive and highly detailed sci-fi world.

Elemental Monster

elementalmonster31

This game really stands out from the tower defense crowd by the simple fact that it uses a pack of deck cards as its primary weapon. All you have to do is to defend the route that leads to your castle from the evil monsters. I know it sounds simple, but trust me it’s not. First you have to pick five cards from a deck of 63, each of them representing a titular monster and you unlock more cards as you go further along the game. Each monster is assigned one of the elements like: Fire, Water, Forest, Light and Dark, which becomes a formidable weapon in fighting your enemies. But you have to be extra careful on some tips and tricks like if you have a monster with Fire, it would be nice to know that it is superior to an enemy with Forest, but inferior to an enemy with Water. The game has separate Phases, and it ends when you defeat the final wave of enemies, or your base is overrun. You also have to be careful and not to let any enemies get through your defenses, otherwise you will lose a point from your base defense points, a number that you mustn’t let reach zero, because it results with a game over. With each end of a Phase you get money, which you can use to buy more monsters for your deck, and here is the catch, you have to make the right choices because you must have evenly matched or more powerful, if possible, monsters from your enemy. Another crucial feature for this game is your patience, you have to play for hours so you can discover the depths that will captivate you and make you wish that the game will never end.

Fieldrunners

fieldrunners1

FieldRunners is a polished tower defense game with crisp graphics, realistic sounds, and extremely addictive gameplay. Instead of defending a set path like in many games of this genre, in FieldRunners you need to construct your towers in such a way to force the baddies to take the most damage. We had the most luck by creating a sort of maze which forces the soldiers to double back and take damage from the same towers several times. As you progress you earn money, which allows you to buy more towers and to upgrade old ones. You also can unlock maps as you get further into the game, adding different challenges and new scenarios that will test your strategic planning. FieldRunners doesn’t have as many available towers as other tower defense games, but the developers continue to improve the game and promise more towers and content in coming releases. Either way, any tower defense fan will appreciate the overall look and feel of this challenging and highly addictive game.

Defender Chronicles - Legend Of The Desert King

defenderchronicles11

All you have to do here is to assume the role of a heroic general and rescue your kingdom from its invaders. Defender chronicles is presented from a 2-D sideview, much like what’s used in platforming games, as opposed to a top-down perspective. The other key difference with this game, though, is that it incorporates a number of RPG elements into its gameplay. Of course, there are also a number of different modes in  Defender chronicles: aside from the default story campaign, there’s also an endless game mode, and two modes that get rid of all the RPG elements like bonus abilities and inventory items. The graphics in Defender chronicles meanwhile, are pretty impressive.  The colors and character design are decidedly cartoony, which seems like a risky style to go with based on the overly-serious nature of the game’s story.

The Wars

the-wars1

This game is one of those games that can keep you addicted for days and days. Like at any tower defense game the goal here is to take out your enemy’s base.  That seems quite simple, but the reality is that your enemy is stronger, has more money and has greater weapons, hence the difficulty of this game. You begin the game with 150 gold pieces, no experience, and very low tech cavemen. Your base is positioned on the left side of the screen. To get warriors, you must buy them with your gold. You must earn your money by killing enemy warriors.  But every now and then your enemy will cause you a total ruin, and when that happens you can use your special weapon, which has an attack powerful enough to devastate your enemies. The graphics in this game are great and the game play is smooth. There are 3 levels of difficulty.  Each is fun to play and play again. And for less than a dollar, this game is an absolute must have for you and your friends.
