Bloons TD 4

bloons-td-4Bloons TD 4 is a tower defence game in which players must ensure no balloon reaches the far side of the screen un-popped.You have your choice of difficulty at the start, and completing campaigns not only unlocks new towers and upgrades, but it also unlocks new maps.Bloons TD 4 is a pretty standard tower defense outing, but with a twist:most of the towers are some type of monkey, and all of the enemies are balloons (or “bloons,” since that’s more fun to say).Monkeys can be upgraded with extended range or better weapons, and you’ll eventually be able to purchase “Super Monkeys,”which are like ultra-fast versions of the cheaper towers.Once you get close to level 40 in any given track, things start getting flat-out ridiculous. You earn money entirely too quickly, and the only way to spend it all is to just keep on buying and fully upgrading monkeys as quickly as your fingers can physically manage. The graphics are excellent and the sounds are as good as ever. The game play is much improved with the addition of the speed up button which makes levels fly by.Like any really good game,Bloons TD 4 is easy to learn, hard to master, but still a deeply satisfying experience at any level. If you’re sick of tower defense games,I can’t say I blame you,but this is the one to make an exception for.It won’t dazzle you with anything new,but it represents the genre at its finest, and it’s well worth the investment.

Puppet War

puppet-war1

And here we go again. The iPod Touch games team has released another game that is unique both in style and gameplay. Puppet War is a game where you have to defend yourself from evil and mutant puppets that are out to get you.You play the part of an old janitor who finds himself stuck in a colorful children’s TV show under attack from the puppets. It’s certainly an original storyline and it’s been well implemented too. The graphics look like a cross between Sesame Street and the Banana Splits and the various puppets that launch themselves at you have a menacing glint in their eye that could really make you believe that they are out to get you. There are a good choice of weapons to choose from too, presuming that is you are skilled enough to unlock them all. From the simplicity of a broom or baseball bat to the explosiveness of grenades and chainsaws there are weapons for everyone here and using them on puppets adds an extra degree of satisfaction to the killing spree. The one major downside to the game is the fact that there is currently only one map and that is the TV Studio itself which despite it looking great can get a little boring after a while. Hopefully a future update will include more maps and add to the fun. As you kill the evil puppet army you will be able to pick up stars which you can then spend on the bigger and better weapons as they become unlocked. You will also find health and ammo packs located around the children’s TV studio and these will certainly come in handy as you progress through the later levels where the action becomes more and more frantic. I really think that there is no need to wait anymore. It certainly beats doing nothing.

Plants vs. Zombies

plants-vs-zombies1

Well this is definitely a tower defense game with a twist. Instead your usual castles and warriors or knights, you have a couple of cute zombies fighting against some even cuter plants. I know it may sound babyish, but humor me and read this review. Yes, the game’s antagonists are zombies—a gimme to rope in men—but your weapons against them are an increasingly powerful and numerous array of plants, earned one-by-one as you complete the game’s 50 levels. Each of those levels sees zombies wandering in from the right as you try to defend your house on the left. Several factors can stop the zombies from reaching your house. The zombies move slowly, during which you tap on sun icons to collect sunshine points—used to buy new plants—and you need to balance adding plants that generate sunshine and others that can serve as weapons. Defensive items can also be placed on the map, notably including walnuts that occupy the hungry zombies as other plants shoot at them, and as your sun points increase, you can use a shovel to dig up weak plants for replacement by more powerful or useful ones. Though this is only a 2-D title, the crisp bitmapped art and clean special effects make better use of Apple’s hardware than many of the 3-D games we’ve played on the iPhone OS platform. As noted before, the touch-based controls are similarly great, and arguably better than their mouse-based predecessors, particularly when the action really starts to heat up.

geoDefense Swarm

goedefense-swarm1All of you who have played geoDefense know that geoDefense Swarm is really a game that is worth having. It’s another entry into the weary genre of tower defense games on the iPod touch, but in terms of purity of gameplay, geoDefense Swarm may be the king of the hill at the moment. While it doesn’t quite match Fieldrunners in terms of accessibility, it’s definitely a better game for experienced tower defense lovers looking for a challenge. We highly recommend it, and rate it an 8.3 out of 10. If you’ve never played a tower defense game, you set up defenses around an area, and then try and survive wave after wave of enemy assaults. In geoDefense, your towers can’t get damaged, so the game’s all about placing them correctly to defend your home base. Graphically, geoDefense Swarm references heavily the neo-vector graphics that leapt to popularity with the popular game Geometry Wars. Bright colors on a black background with glowing, space-warping explosions all over the place. In the heat of battle, it can be very difficult to tell what’s going on due to all the flashing lights. For all the chaos, the different towers and enemy types are easy to distinguish, due to unique colors and silhouettes. The interface shows that Critical Thought Games know what they’re doing, as it’s precise and easy to handle. The game isn’t without flaws. It has quite a steep learning curve, and learning how various towers and creeps (that’s the bad guys) work isn’t explained very well, you just have to use trial and error. You’re definitely thrown in the deep end with this one and are expected to sink or swim without much instruction. To be honest nothing is perfect, which means that this game is not without its flaws, but we really that in the future these flaws will be corrected, and turn this amazingly fun game into an absolute must have.

The Creeps

creepsThis is a tower defense game with a twist. Instead of your usual towers, castles or fortresses that need to be guarded, you have a small child on its bed, that represents the tower in this case. You are supposed to defend the child from several monsters and boogie men that are trying to give it nightmares. One other twist are the obstacles on your weapons placement. usually in a tower defense game you can place your weapon almost everywhere as long as it is on your enemies path.  But here that is not possible. There are several places that are not a good choice for your weapons placement. Your enemies are the Creeps that live in your closet and they are coming to get you! Defend yourself with toy blasters, glue bottles, flashlights and boomerangs. Summon a giant spider to slow your enemies, or a UFO to sap their energy! Slick the path with oil to make the Creeps slide fast down hill and climb slowly up hill. Or command a tornado to pick the Creeps up and carry them along the path in any direction! You can control tower positions by tapping on an open space and then selecting which tower to place. Once placed towers will attack enemies once they are in range, or you can select enemies or other objects to manually target them. Upgrades can be purchased by tapping on a tower and hitting the upgrade button. If you’ve played tower defense games before, you’ll be familiar with the controls. The hand drawn cartoon visuals look great, and there is a surprising amount of different enemy appearances which helps to vary up the gameplay. The sound effects are amusing and make up for the game’s lack of music. But if players really want music, they can use their iPod with no loss of game sound effects.  All in all this is an interesting game with a lot of new stuff, which promises to give you a great time.

Sentinel 2 Earth Defense

sentinel-2-earth-defense1

My personal opinion is that tower defense games have everything a true gamer needs to become addicted to a game. And Sentinel 2: Earth Defense is just another truly impressive game  that definitely fall into the addicting games category. Your efforts and sacrifices were not enough to keep the aliens from Sentinel 1 away from your planet. Now they have returned more cunning and eager to revenge.  So again, you have to defend your base from numerous waves of aliens as they traverse preset paths. Sentinel 2 has seven towers, and while some are genre standards, there are some creative towers like the ion tower, which creates a fire on the path that will burn oncoming aliens. You can earn money from defeating aliens, and you can use these money to buy stronger and more powerful towers, and upgrades for those towers. Keeping your intermediate gates intact adds to your score, and if your final barrier is broken through, you lose. In addition, after each round, gates beam up energy to the Sentinel. Energy is used for utilizing one of the Sentinel’s four weapons: homing missiles, attack drones, time warp, and orbital laser… all of which affect the whole map and are extremely powerful. This game contains two game modes: Campaign - where you have four maps with a preset number of waves, and you cannot unlock the next map, until you have completed the one you are on at the moment, and you also have to be aware that each map contains four levels of difficulty; and missions mode - where you have ten missions with tricky scenarios and very low resources, so you will have to defeat the aliens just by using your God given skills. If you download this game you will notice that the graphics are definitely one of the best, the theme is fantastic, bringing to you an impressive and highly detailed sci-fi world.

Elemental Monster

elementalmonster31

This game really stands out from the tower defense crowd by the simple fact that it uses a pack of deck cards as its primary weapon. All you have to do is to defend the route that leads to your castle from the evil monsters. I know it sounds simple, but trust me it’s not. First you have to pick five cards from a deck of 63, each of them representing a titular monster and you unlock more cards as you go further along the game. Each monster is assigned one of the elements like: Fire, Water, Forest, Light and Dark, which becomes a formidable weapon in fighting your enemies. But you have to be extra careful on some tips and tricks like if you have a monster with Fire, it would be nice to know that it is superior to an enemy with Forest, but inferior to an enemy with Water. The game has separate Phases, and it ends when you defeat the final wave of enemies, or your base is overrun. You also have to be careful and not to let any enemies get through your defenses, otherwise you will lose a point from your base defense points, a number that you mustn’t let reach zero, because it results with a game over. With each end of a Phase you get money, which you can use to buy more monsters for your deck, and here is the catch, you have to make the right choices because you must have evenly matched or more powerful, if possible, monsters from your enemy. Another crucial feature for this game is your patience, you have to play for hours so you can discover the depths that will captivate you and make you wish that the game will never end.
